SIGHT AND SEEN, AND HEARD
We open the issue with a projects mix in mechanised tunnelling. There are always more images than can be shared in print but it is good to take opportunity to show and celebrate milestones using the technology, whether preparing for, starting or completing tunnel bores. The images in our look at Rail
& Metro tunnels are different - graphics, to further inform on the value of project pipelines in such tunnel-related investments, based on analysis by GlobalData. On matters of safety - and more
for during the construction phase of a project, we hear from New Zealand where a wider mission approach has been taken by the client and contractor, together, on the Auckland Central Interceptor. Further on safety, and specifically
fire safety for operating road tunnels, a new model of investigating risk has been developed by London Bridge Associates. We have a feature article from LBA discussing the approach and its different aspects. A major international spotlight
on trenchless tunnelling is coming up soon in the form of the North American annual No-Dig Show. We
preview this year’s large conference and exhibition in Denver, Colorado. Education and information, and
guidance comes in many forms, shared by tunnellers and practitioners well experienced in their profession and arts. We are pleased to have an article from an equipment supplier discussing the evolution of the business along with technical trends over the last few decades. And, talking decades, we have two
books reviewed - one from the US, with excellent narratives and scope; the other being the fantastic major tome of tunnelling centred on the UK - ‘Tunnelling Tales’ - covering the first five decades of the BTS, and now out. A wonderful book and significant achievement by BTS, and all involved, covering so much in both projects and stories of people. In this issue we remember, too,
Rodney Craig, a leading tunneller who recently passed away.
