News Annual lecture highlights mining dam safety

Dr Violeta Martin, a specialist hydrotechnical engineer at Knight Piésold Canada, addressed the critical issue of mining dam safety during the 20th Annual Geological Engineering Distinguished Lecture at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in early April. Martin’s presentation, titled ‘Navigating Dam Failures: Insights and Solutions’, captivated an audience of students, faculty and industry professionals, shedding light on

the complexities of mining dam safety and effective mitigation strategies. With over 30 years of experience, Martin is a renowned authority in dam breach analysis for water retaining and tailings dams. She emphasised the importance of understanding the risks associated with mining dams and discussed various failure modes and risk assessment techniques. Martin stressed the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety of

Piedmont Lithium moves forward with Carolina Lithium project

Piedmont Lithium has received approval for a mining permit for its Carolina lithium project in North Carolina, US, from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources (DEMLR). After thorough review, the permit allows Piedmont Lithium to proceed with the construction, operation and reclamation phases of the project, located in Gaston County. The Carolina lithium project aims to become a fully integrated lithium operation, including mining, spodumene concentrate production and lithium hydroxide conversion. Anticipating an annual output of 30,000t of lithium hydroxide, the project is poised to significantly impact the American lithium

landscape, potentially doubling the current US production capacity of 20,000t per year. Construction of the Carolina lithium project is pending the acquisition of remaining permits, rezoning approvals and securing project financing. Piedmont Lithium’s president and CEO, Keith Phillips, stressed the importance of community engagement and collaboration with the Gaston County Board of Commissioners during the rezoning process. Phillips emphasised the company’s commitment to realising the project’s potential and exploring funding avenues, including discussions with potential partners and entities like the US Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office.

communities and ecosystems, highlighting her role in the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) and her contributions to dam safety committees. Ken Embree, president of Knight Piésold Canada, praised Martin’s leadership and dedication to advancing dam safety and emergency planning. He noted her influence as a distinguished lecturer, inspiring young engineers and shaping the future of dam engineering.
