As to the changes that attendees can expect, these fall mostly into functional improvements. “We have enlarged some of the aisles in the halls, which were [previously] very narrow,” Schmitt explains. “Also, in the outdoor area, there are one or [two aisles that] we have enlarged slightly for crowd management. All in all, bauma will look almost the same as in 2019. It will be a live and on-site event.” With all the cancellations and compromises that other events have had to resort to over the course of the pandemic, that’s nothing to sneeze at. There are a number of highlights that Schmitt is eager to draw attention to, such as the bauma Innovation Hall LAB0, which will feature the bauma Forum, the science hub, the start-up area, VR experience and ‘Machines in Construction’ MIC 4.0. With regards to these highlights, Schmitt goes on to provide some more details. The bauma Forum, for example, features international lectures, keynotes and discussion panels, and focuses on one of bauma’s previously mentioned key themes each day. At the science hub, ten universities, colleges and scientific institutes from different disciplines have the “[opportunity] of presenting research projects, building and maintaining networks and bringing research to life by presenting it vividly”, says Schmitt. The aim is to show the link between research results and vocational training, winning project partners from the industry, exchanging ideas with other institutions, inspiring young people to study technology and conveying the idea that technology can be fun and exciting.

The start-up area is brand new at bauma. Powered by VDMA Startup-Machine – a ‘matchmaking’ service for the mechanical engineering industry – young and upcoming companies can present their innovative ideas at small booths in this space, providing them with an extra platform to gain attention, feedback and experience. In addition, they have the chance to hold lectures in the bauma Forum to present the projects and concepts they’re working on.

“MIC 4.0 is an initiative of the VDMA together with industry partners to create uniform, manufacturer- independent and machine-independent digital communication around the construction process,” says Schmitt. 11 member companies of the ‘Machines in Construction MIC 4.0’ working group will present the results of their intensive collaboration under the name of MIC 4.0 BUS.

MIC 4.0 BUS is a universal, uniform and manufacturer-independent data interface between attachment tools and construction machinery that can display all the relevant use cases for communication between construction machinery and attachments. Following bauma, the MIC 4.0 BUS will be published and made available to all interested manufacturers, with the goal of becoming the standard for the industry.

At the MIC 4.0 stand, visitors can also discuss and consider all other types and classes of construction machinery with regards to a uniform digital language and a uniform data understanding with experts. And last but not least, Schmitt notes, bauma once again features Think BIG, which offers an opportunity for trainees, students and young professionals to gain an insight into the construction machinery industry as a whole, including its different career opportunities.

“After two years of ‘lockdown’, we are happy to be able to hold bauma 2022 and give the industry the platform for business as well as personal meetings. Both indeed are necessary. ”

Nicole Schmitt, bauma exhibition director

Without a doubt, there’s plenty on offer for an industry that is ready and eager to resume good old- fashioned face-to-face trade fairs and conferences. The success of the upcoming bauma event will go a long way towards signalling a return to norm on that front, and help spur on greater communication and collaboration within the mining, construction and building material machinery industries. ●
