CEO DIARIES

STRENGTH IN PARTNERSHIP

Balancing two centuries of industrial heritage with rapid digital transformation, Demag continues to evolve its global reach. René Schlieker, vice president at Demag Distribution, speaks to Hoist about life cycle support, smart hoists and why people are the ultimate competitive advantage in material handling.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role as an industry leader? I have been part of the Demag journey for more than 20 years, supporting the company in various roles across engineering, product management, sales and business leadership. Today, I am focused on driving Demag’s international transformation, always with customer value at the centre of our decisions. What I enjoy most is connecting people, building alignment across teams and partners, and turning strategy into practical actions that strengthen Demag’s position in the market.

Can you tell us how you got into this industry and why? I joined Demag as an apprentice in 2002 while completing a combined academic programme. For me, the real question is not why I entered the industry, but why I stayed, both with Demag and later within the Konecranes Group. The answer is the people. Over the past two decades, I have worked with colleagues, partners and customers around the world, and I have always been inspired by their enthusiasm for our products and for the Demag brand. That shared passion remains one of the strongest reasons why I continue to enjoy this industry today.
