MODULIFT MAKING WAVES
Waves as well as winds can generate power. Wave Energy Scotland needed to decommission a pioneering 300t wave energy device. Support services company Green Marine, based in the Orkneys, used modular spreader beams from Modulift to help raise the heavy device from below the North Sea.
Green Marine’s GM700 catamaran barge, specially designed for such tasks, was anchored over the submerged load. The barge has two gantry cranes, each with two multi-fall hoists with ramshorn hooks. To lift the device from the water two round slings basketed it around its middle, with their ends connecting to the four ramshorn hooks via a specially designed lifting rig. To ensure that crane hooks were loaded in a vertical direction the rig design used two Modulift MOD 400 Spreader Beams. Unusually, normally be the top slings of the spreader beams became the bottom round slings that went around the load.
Modulift to supply the beams as they knew exactly what was required for our operations. The spreaders have been performing extremely well. We are now investigating in some of Modulift trunnion end units provide a shackle free lifting solution where the size and weight of the shackles can be potentially prohibitive. Using the trunnions has proved to reduce cost, increase safety and speed up the whole
