The 2024 edition of the Nuclear Engineering International World Nuclear Industry Handbook offers a directory of companies, organisations and service providers working across the nuclear sector. It also includes a listing of operating reactors and units under construction.

Nuclear generation saw a substantial global increase during 2023, largely on the recovery of output from France following repairs to a large proportion of its reactor fleet. According to World Nuclear Association (WNA) figures, nuclear power plants produced a total of 2602 TWh of electricity over the year, up 58 TWh on the 2022 output, of which 42 TWh came from the increased nuclear generation in France. Despite the recovery though, the 2023 figure was still down 51 TWh on the 2653 TWh generated in 2021. Although five reactors permanently closed in 2023 – along with the German plants Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2, Tihange 2 in Belgium and Kuosheng 2 in Taiwan also closed – five new reactors were connected to the grid. New connections came in the Korean Republic at Shin Hanul 2, Belorussia’s Ostrovets 2, Slovakia’s Mochovce 3, Vogtle 3 in the USA, and Fangchenggang 3 in China. Thus, the total number of operable reactors at the end of 2023 was unchanged from 2022’s 437 while the combined global operable nuclear generating capacity was 398 GWe, including 21 GWe of reactor capacity in Japan and India and a further 9 GWe elsewhere, including nearly 6 GWe at Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. The total capacity of reactors that actually produced electricity during 2023 was 368 GWe, up 3 GWe on the 2022 figure.

A further six construction starts began in 2023 bringing the total number of units under construction at the end of 2023 to 61, an increase of one on 2022.
