GLOBAL NUCLEAR |

Dawne Hickton: Jacobs Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Offi cer, Critical Mission Solutions

Essential today and tomorrow

NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY IS AN ESSENTIAL part of today’s and tomorrow’s world. It offers reliable, low-emission energy, powers spaceships

and desalination plants, kills cancers and, through irradiation, keeps food fresh and preserves historical artefacts. Electricity generated from the world’s nuclear reactors

increased for the seventh consecutive year in 2019 and, in 2020, the nuclear industry was an essential part of the response to the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring the continuity of electricity supplies and grid stability. With global electricity demand likely to double by 2050,

nuclear will be needed more than ever to keep global warming below 2°C. Its role in providing baseload power to underpin the expansion of solar and renewables is a key enabler for the transition away from fossil fuels. Jacobs supports hundreds of programs worldwide

throughout these fundamental stages of the nuclear lifecycle: new build, operational support, and decommissioning and remediation. Drawing on a heritage which reaches back to the

inception of the industry more than 60 years ago, we support existing reactors and facilities while also helping clients to deliver next generation technologies such as fusion power and small modular reactors, which promise to unlock a more climate-resilient future for our world. We manage radioactive waste, site closures and

remediation on three continents. Even more importantly, we are constantly applying our engineering, digital analytics and research capabilities to make decommissioning safer, faster and less costly. I hope you will enjoy reading about the ways in which

we’re helping clients solve the world’s most complex nuclear challenges safely and effectively. And if our work is relevant to the challenges you face,

please contact my Jacobs colleagues whose contact details appear in the articles. ■
