Culture of caring The global solutions company that helps out locally
BEING AN INTEGRAL PART OF the community is what Jacobs is about, says Paul Fletcher. And that is never clearer than when Cumbria, in the North West of England, is facing a crisis.
During the catastrophic flooding caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015, Jacobs donated money and equipment and staff gave their time to help. And during the coronavirus pandemic, the company has donated equipment to community groups to enable their staff to work remotely; supported charities with bid writing and business plans; helped to create a platform for virtual/ remote volunteering; provided vans to deliver meals for key workers; and redeployed staff to support local initiatives. Paul, Cumbria Projects Director, says: “We don’t do this
for a round of applause or pats on the back. We do it because of our culture of caring. We feel an obligation to support people when they’re in need. We’ve been active on the Sellafield nuclear site for more than 50 years and our people are predominantly local, so our roots go very deep.” There is no doubt that this willingness to support the
community is deeply appreciated. Emma Williamson, co- chair of a local resilience group, wrote to Paul and his team: “I want to thank you enormously for the part Jacobs played in supporting our communities during the last few months of the COVID-19 crisis. The direct support in terms of people, vans and project managers resulted in us being able to send out more than 6,000 meals and care packages, 6,000 being the total delivered by Jacobs staff.” Jacobs describes itself as a global technology forward solutions company. It employs more than 900 people in Cumbria including 19 apprentices. Last year it cemented its position by becoming Sellafield Ltd’s engineering design partner under the 20-year Programme and Project Partners (PPP) procurement model. The services it provides to Sellafield also include asset management and asset care, decommissioning, managing major programs and projects, scientific analysis and other specialist technical services. In summer 2020, Jacobs opened a new Engineering
and Technology Centre near Egremont, West Cumbria, to meet a growing demand for engineering development skills to design, build and test new decommissioning technologies and techniques from concept through to implementation. The 1,320m2

Beckermet Industrial Estate enhances Jacobs’ capabilities and will also be a centre for collaboration with highly innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based in Cumbria. “We have seen a growing demand for this kind of work, which we have been doing for some years at our engineering development centre in Warrington,” says Paul. “So we saw a great opportunity to invest in Cumbria, providing a facility which will enable us to serve our clients better, and also to collaborate with local small and medium
