ČEZ, Czechia’s largest energy utility, appointed Amentum


to carry out environmental impact assessment reports to support proposals for SMRs on two sites. The reports will cover potential radiological hazards, waste management, accident conditions and consequences, measures to prevent groundwater and river contamination, transport, noise and dispersion. Amentum was selected because its team based in Brno includes nuclear professionals and staff with deep knowledge of Czech environmental legislation and planning processes. In France, Amentum supplies ITER, the world’s largest fusion energy experiment, with engineering design services and a wide range of specialist technical support such as remote handling and robotics. As construction management contractor, we are responsible for coordinating the assembly of more than one million components in the ITER machine. In Poland, Amentum is technical advisor to Polskie


Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, the state-owned company leading the country’s first nuclear new build programme. Ever since the programme began in 2014, the company has assisted with many different aspects of work including vendor and site selection. Amentum is also creating a nuclear centre of excellence, a hub for technical collaboration and training that will help to build the in- country supply chain that Poland will need as a nuclear power nation. Mark Whitney, Amentum’s President for Energy and


Environment, recently met Wojciech Wrochna, the Polish government’s Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure in Warsaw, to discuss strengthening cooperation on nuclear energy development. They agreed to work together on reactor innovation, safety protocols, radioactive waste management and creating greater opportunities for Polish suppliers to engage in global nuclear supply chains. Amentum takes the view that gigawatt reactors, small modular and advanced modular reactors will be needed to meet the expected doubling of electricity demand in advanced economies by 2050. SMRs are more likely to be deployed close to energy-


intensive industries such as AI data centres, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, hydrogen production, and power- hungry green industrial clusters. Amentum is helping several SMR developers with


materials testing and other aspects of regulatory compliance from its facility at Birchwood Park near Warrington, which is home to the UK’s largest commercial nuclear laboratory complex. Deploying deep nuclear knowledge and drawing on experience with many different reactor types, the company’s technical specialists are delivering innovative solutions for vendors in the UK, USA and continental Europe.


Amentum sees great opportunities in the USA, which is


likely to be the world’s biggest spender on nuclear power over the next 10 years. By combining the nuclear expertise in our international and US businesses, we aim to play a major role. President Donald Trump’s executive orders issued in May


called for a huge expansion of US nuclear energy output: ● Quadrupling US nuclear capacity to 300 GW by 2050,


with 10 new large reactors with complete designs under construction by 2030


● Speeding up nuclear reactor licensing ● Laying the groundwork for faster reactor testing ● Deploying reactors for AI and military bases ● Enabling new research into fuel recycling and reprocessing


● Increasing domestic nuclear fuel production ● Expanding US nuclear energy exports


Mark Whitney says: “We expect to make a major contribution to achieving these objectives. We’re creating a new powerhouse in nuclear services by bringing together Amentum’s expertise in the USA and the rest of the world. “Beyond revitalising domestic nuclear capacity, the US


has a strategic opportunity to export nuclear technology and expertise globally. Many nations are expanding their nuclear programmes or considering the introduction of nuclear power to meet rising energy needs, offering the US the opportunity to be a key partner in this effort.” Amentum has made a significant investment to create a


Nuclear Center of Excellence (COE) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It will serve as a strategic hub for nuclear expertise, engineering, and operational excellence, furthering Amentum’s position at the forefront of nuclear solutions needed for large-scale power generation, advanced energy technologies, and strengthening the national security of the United States. The Nuclear COE’s core mission will support the


expansion of nuclear power in large and smaller scale capacities while leveraging decades of Amentum’s global experience in the nuclear industry. It will also assist in the development of innovative


technologies fit for the complexity and exacting standards of nuclear engineering, including AI and automation, as well as safety and cybersecurity solutions. Working closely with government agencies and partners in the public and private sectors, it will support the maintenance and modernization of nuclear infrastructure to ensure safe operations. ■
