EFCO | ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

Machining solutions that save crucial time

From valves to flanges, EFCO delivers outstanding machining results in minimal time, combining nuclear-grade precision with proven dependability.

IN A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, every minute counts, especially in radiation-exposed areas. Machines used in these “hot zones” must not only deliver precision and speed but also operate reliably for years without failure. Take EFCO’s HSL-15, for example: once brought into the hot zone, it remains there for the rest of its service life. That’s why every component must meet the highest standards of durability, maintainability, and performance. EFCO Maschinenbau brings decades of dedicated focus to this field, delivering reliably excellent machining outcomes, quickly and dependably. This article spotlights three representative solutions from EFCO’s broader portfolio, the TD CNC, HSL-15, and VSA, chosen for their ability to compress machining time while protecting component integrity. In nuclear settings, that time saving also means less time for personnel near radiation- relevant areas, further strengthening operational safety. Remote operation and fast alignment features of the portable CNC machines compliment that goal.

TD CNC – Versatile, fast, and safer by design EFCO’s portable TD-CNC brings CNC consistency to on-site work, combining intuitive operation with a comprehensive set of standard cycles. In practice, technicians can execute boring and facing alongside tapered, radiuses, and grooving operations, without advanced programming, via a mobile control panel that allows the machine to be operated from a safe distance. The platform’s design enables quick, precise alignment to the machining surface, reducing setup time and overall cycle duration. The net effect is a significant reduction in machining time, achieved through automated cycles and rapid re-alignment between steps. Benefits that translate directly into shorter interventions and, in nuclear contexts, less operator time at the component.

HSL-15 – High-speed results on hard overlays When hard overlays like Stellite need to be restored quickly and cleanly, the HSL-15 shows why high-speed grinding is a cornerstone of EFCO’s offering. Its driven grinding spindles deliver documented material removal rates and surface finishes that cut machining time by up to 90% compared to conventional methods. For outages and tight maintenance windows, that performance helps bring equipment back online faster. To tackle heavy damage and demanding service

conditions, EFCO’s GSS high-performance grinding discs are available; they are specifically intended for large-scale damage removal and for use in hot valves, complementing the HSL approach where appropriate. And where installation space precludes the planetary disc assembly, the traditional SL-15.02 (from the SL series) with optimized consumables provides a compact, reliable alternative.

Quick setup, broad tooling, proven precision EFCO’s VSA series is known for fast, precise results on flat and conical seats, as well as bores, across valves, flanges, and related components. Operators benefit from continuous axial feed, precise centring and height adjustment, and a wide selection of grinding tools (including cup wheels, conical sleeves for angles, and CBN wheels). The machines are engineered for straightforward mounting and short installation times, supporting both workshop and on-site use. As with other EFCO platforms, the VSA is delivered with extensive accessories as part of a complete repair system, streamlining logistics and execution.

Equally integral: EFCO testing solutions Alongside machining, EFCO’s valve testing and inspection technologies constitute an equally important pillar of the product portfolio. From portable to stationary configurations, these systems verify pressure integrity and functional performance after maintenance, providing the documentation and assurance nuclear operators require. In concert with EFCO’s machining solutions, they help close the loop, from precise rework to validated readiness.
