Enhanced operational oversight and power plant modernization

AHLBERG CAMERAS, A GLOBAL LEADER in radiation resistant visual inspection equipment for the nuclear industry, recently secured a significant long-term modernization project for a nuclear power plant in Northern Europe. The modernization project is focused on transforming its vital production CCTV infrastructure with modern, scalable, and future-resilient technology. As key components neared the end of their service life and replacement parts became scarce, the facility faced growing risks to the reliability of its existing surveillance setup. A forward-looking solution was required to maintain continuous monitoring of essential areas such as reactor containment, turbine halls, and other sub-systems.

Modernizing surveillance across multiple reactor units A variety of fixed and mobile CCTV systems have been selected to address the various surveillance needs across the facility. These solutions include options such as integrated audio, lighting, and pan-tilt functionality. Mobile cameras are also included to support temporary monitoring during maintenance activities or other short-term operations. Additional components include rack-mounted CCTV cabinets that host servers with Video Management System (VMS), and operator workstations; KVM extender systems enabling full operator control; and cable solutions designed to re-use and integrate existing
signal wire infrastructure through Ethernet conversion. The system hardware is intended for deployment
across multiple zones, each categorized by its level of radioactive contamination. Some components are located within the reactor containment areas, where ionizing radiation (gamma and neutron} are consistently present. Other areas required placement in spaces with lower radiation levels but still demanded rugged and reliable monitoring solutions. Environmental conditions were classified into three tiers: low, medium, and high risk of radioactive contamination.

High Radiation Area

PT255 Pan & Tilt Unit: A heavy-duty unit offering precise positioning and long operational life, even under extreme conditions.
CCTV LED5 Lighting: High-intensity LED lighting optimized for radiation areas to provide clear visibility in low-light conditions.
MIC25 Microphone: Radiation-tolerant microphone providing directional audio capture for critical zones.
Medium Radiation Area
CCTV71: A compact, radiation-tolerant model ideal for environments with lower exposure levels. Offers the same imaging performance with a smaller form factor.
PT85 Pan & Tilt Unit: Compact and durable, designed for reliable positioning in less aggressive areas.
CCTV LED5 & MIC25: Same lighting and audio module pairing for consistency across the platform.
Low Radiation Area
NON-RAD PTZ Cameras: High-performance pan-tilt- zoom cameras from a proven European manufacturer, well-suited for low-risk areas.
