FOMAS GROUP | ADVERTORIAL

affected by high radiation, are stored for years within dedicated casks and deposited into suitable warehouses. Furthermore, countries that have decided to phase out from nuclear production keep a relevant activity in waste management to ensure a proper supply chain for a safe and reliable storage of spent fuel. As a result, nuclear waste management is a fundamental part of the global energy market.

The critical phases associated with handling and

transportation of the spent fuel, despite the risks being very low, require in terms of quality of the casks a very high standard. Thus, the canisters are tested for being resistant

to any incident and other severe chemical attacks. Different technologies are deployed to keep a high- level standard: the inner part of the cask is protected by multiple layers of steel, concrete and other materials commonly adopted to follow end-user requirements. Some players offer their own design, some others customise the final product based on customer requirements. For casks with inner assembly of forged components, the typical configuration includes a cylindrical shell body and upper and lower lid to be assembled (typically welded). The final assembly’s height is usually 2-3 metres with a diameter of around 2 metres. Despite geometry being standard, the complexity comes from the different chemistry adopted. On top of cask manufacturing, the nuclear waste management sector also includes the tools used for handling, transporting and storing of the casks to dedicated sites (usually old mines converted into warehouses, where layers of rocks offer a safe and reliable place to prevent accidents for hundreds of years). This market can rely on only a few main manufacturers,

mainly based in North America, Europe and Japan. These groups have been successfully able to focus their activities on this market segment which offers recurrent demand for identical components from many different countries. How does FOMAS Group fit into the nuclear waste management market? The Group is a leading company in forging steel shells and lids with the highest quality standard. Thanks to the previously described experience in the nuclear segment, as well as its willingness to accept challenges to meet critical markets, which keeps it on the forefront, it has a great advantage for co-development of innovative design and tough metallurgic requirements. The steel grades usually selected for these items grants high tensile requirements and critical values on impact tests (Pellini test), to make sure that an elevated level of toughness is guaranteed. “Mastering the science of metals” is the motto of the Group, which has extensive experience not only on carbon manganese steels typical of the nuclear business, but also on austenitic and super austenitic grades, both conventional and stabilised, and high Mn alloys. In the table, shown right, it is possible to view all the material the Group can process. Finally, FOMAS Group strives to sustain profitability,

supplying the highest level of quality and safety throughout the manufacturing cycle and ensuring the least environmental impact. Today, the Group supplies forgings following ASME, RCCM, TÜV, KTA, ISO EN, BS, GOST, JAW, and NNSA–HAF604. ■ Visit our website: www.fomasgroup.com
