GROWTH CONTINUES IN NEW LCV MARKET
he UK new LCV market grew year-on-year for the ninth month in a row in September, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

A total of 44,760 LCVs were registered in the plate-change month, up by 28.1% compared with September 2022. The market-leading 2.5–3.5t van segment recorded a 13% year-on-year increase in registrations, to 29,150, while the 2.0-2.5t van segment saw registrations surge by 89%, to 7,085. Registrations of vans weighing less than 2.0t, however, were down by 13.4% to 880.
Pick-up truck registrations were up by 64.4% to 6,349, while 4x4 registrations rose by 141.8% to 1,296. Demand for electric vans increased by 85.9% in September, with 2,882
registered, accounting for 6.4% of the overall market.
In the first nine months of the year, total new LCV sales grew by 20.8% compared to the same period in 2022. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes
said: “Vans are irreplaceable workhorses that keep Britain on the move, so a bumper September capping nine months of growing fleet renewal is good news for the economy, the environment and society. “Decarbonising this sector is fundamental to the wider net-zero transition and as vans are business critical, urgent measures are needed to grow operator confidence to invest now, in 2024 and beyond. “In particular, the specific needs of van operators must be considered when planning public charging strategies.”
The Ford Transit Custom topped the September sales chart with 5,103 registrations, ahead of the Ford Transit with 3,470 and the Vauxhall Vivaro with 3,086.

The grant is applied on top of existing
government incentives, and includes the installation of a free home Ohme or Free2Move wallbox and £400 public charging credit with Octopus. Customers who already have a home charger will instead receive a £750+VAT customer deposit contribution.
The grant will run until the end of
2023 and is available with all purchase and lease options, including outright purchase, conditional sale/hire purchase, finance lease or business contract hire through Leasys.
The production of electric vans at Stellantis’s Ellesmere Port factory has begun.
Models being made at the site include the Vauxhall Combo Electric,
Peugeot e-Partner, Citroën e-Berlingo and in a newly-announced move, the Fiat E-Doblo. Ellesmere Port opened in 1962, and for most of its life produced Vauxhall cars. It has received a £100million upgrade to produce EVs. Plant director Diane Miller said: “The start of electric vehicle production at Ellesmere Port signals a bright future for the plant, ensuring it will continue to manufacture vehicles for many years to come. “With Vauxhall’s long history of UK manufacturing, it’s especially fitting that the first electric model to roll off Ellesmere Port’s production line is a Combo Electric. Whilst the welcome addition of the Fiat E-Doblo to the plant is a positive reflection of increasing electric vehicle demand.
“Stellantis is committed to working with the government to ensure the UK automotive industry remains competitive for producing electric vehicles for the long-term.”
