CUTTING CARBON DRIVES FLEETS TO GO GREEN
diesel vehicles to EVs, according to research by Northgate undertaken at its summer roadshow. The rental company asked attendees at its Drive to Zero roadshow event for their views on electrification and 50% gave carbon reduction as their main motivation for reducing emissions. Potential cost savings were the

primary motivation for 22%, while a further 22% said they were motivated by fulfilling customer requirements. Just 3% of those surveyed said they were not feeling any pressure to move away from diesel, while 9% admitted to not having given any consideration to starting electrification. Northgate found 63.6% of fleets were just starting out on their electrification process, while 21.2% said they were already on their way to a zero-emission fleet. Of those surveyed, 36.3% said the cost of electrification was a major concern, while 33.3% said implementing the change was set to be their biggest challenge. In addition, 15.1% of fleets said they were concerned at both charging and vehicle choice in equal measure, especially when looking to replace diesel LCVs directly with equivalent EVs.

Northgate EV business development manager Melanie Creedy said: “These roadshows are extremely useful as they are giving us real time feedback from different types and sizes of fleet during their move to electric. It enables my team to understand the type of help and support they need. “Everybody’s journey is different,
arbon reduction is the number one reason LCV fleet operators are interested in moving from
but whatever stage they are at, cost and implementation consistently keep coming up as their main challenge.” Meanwhile, Northgate is urging LCV fleets to reduce their CO2 emissions by improving their utilisation of vehicles and drivers even before adopting electric vans.
It said it has identified multiple fleets
where, although the move from diesel to electric will take several years, it was encouraging a move to more efficient working as part of an emissions reduction process.
Northgate recommends fleets instal telematics in order to track their vehicle journeys and utilisation and to record individual driving styles to enable them to influence and improve driver behaviour.
Northgate also encourages fleets to right-size vehicles, based on the capacity and weight of loads being carried, and said driver training and fuel cards could also have a part to play. It also advised businesses to issue a self-service vehicle inspection app to drivers, in order to enable regular monitoring of a vehicle’s condition while supporting safety and compliance.
Northgate sales and marketing director Neil McCrossan said: “By measuring and then improving the utilisation of vehicles and drivers, companies will immediately reduce their carbon footprint even before they move to electric vehicles. “When a company is ready to switch to EVs these insights and data will be vital when helping decide which drivers and electric LCVs to put on individual delivery routes.
“None of this initial work to reduce carbon levels will go to waste prior to EVs being added to a fleet.”
