In keeping with tradition, August is the month when What Van? goes green and this issue is packed with content about electrification and the road to net zero. In our News section, we report on the latest sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders that show a rise in new battery electric van (BEV) sales in July of almost 95%. We also report on an increase in the scrappage grant available to van operators who will be affected by the soon-to- be-expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London. BEVs, however, still only account for little more than 5% of new LCV sales and businesses could be forgiven for feeling they are receiving mixed messages from the government about EV adoption. On the one hand, the 2030 deadline for the withdrawal of ICE vehicles is still in place but on the other the government appears to be rowing back on its support for low-emission zones in the wake of the Uxbridge by-election result, which was judged to be influenced by anti-ULEZ sentiment. Surely, having put the wheels in motion towards cutting out carbon in such a short time frame, the government now needs to unambiguously support businesses of all sizes in their journey towards zero emissions.
