Managing the dermatological effects of COVID precautions

‘The use of precautionary measures, including emollients, barrier creams, and moisturisers, is essential in preventing skin complications aggravated by preventive steps taken during the pandemic.’ [Darlenski, 2020]

Frequent hand hygiene procedures and the wearing of face coverings have now become part of everyday life; not just for health professionals, but for almost anyone leaving their home. Whilst these measures are necessary to help prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus which causes COVID-19), they have led to a reported increase in dermatological problems, particularly irritant contact dermatitis.

For anyone at risk of irritant contact dermatitis or other adverse reactions to hand hygiene products and frequent use of PPE, additional skin moisturising is needed. Emollient creams contain fats and oils that increase skin hydration; some emollients enhance hydration by the action of humectants which help restore the skin's natural barrier.

Pharmacists are well placed to advise on the most suitable emollients and the Zeroderma range is here to help. The Zeroderma range is the trusted choice for smart-thinking skincare, providing the most comprehensive range of cost-effective emollients. All Zeroderma products have received British Skin Foundation (BSF) accreditation offering zero compromise on quality.

Zeroderma also have a range of free, smart, zero-compromise tools for pharmacists to help when advising customers and patients about managing skin irritation due to COVID precautions.

Advise patients of the following before using an emollient: Do not smoke or go near naked flames – risk of severe burns. Fabric (clothing, bedding, dressings etc) that has been in contact with this product burns more easily and is a serious fire hazard. Washing clothing and bedding may reduce product build-up but not totally remove it.
