‘Bigger and more interactive’ celebrated this year.
POLICE magazine spoke to Melanie Davies, who heads the Federation’s Marketing and Events team, about the challenge of arranging a virtual conference.
She said: “It’s a first for PFEW and a huge challenge. We’ve had to change perceptions of what is possible. We are building on the success of last year’s virtual National Police Memorial Day, where we managed to take the best of the physical elements and add to it.” Melanie is confident there will
be a similar wow factor from the online conference. “We’ve got some big names planned,” she revealed, “Ian Collins and Danny Shaw, ex-BBC Home Affairs correspondent will both facilitate sessions. Andy Marsh, Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset, will talk about his experience of policing protests and Dame Cressida Dick, the Met Commissioner, will present the Women in Policing Award.” Martin Durden-Smith, who
hosts the Federation’s annual Police Bravery Awards, will shine a light on the 2020 and 2021 nominees whose incredible acts of courage will be
Melanie added: “I believe that
this year’s conference will reach a bigger national and international audience than ever before. Interaction will really bring the event to life, as members will be able to ask questions via a live video link and we’ll have straw polls. “We benchmarked against best
practice to establish what would work online to encourage engagement and energy, and this included looking at session duration – we’re keeping them all to 45 minutes, with plenty of breaks. “We’ve streamed annual
conference on our website in previous years but, in terms of being able to join in, or interact with exhibitors, this is in a new league.” Melanie predicts that future
events may well be a hybrid of physical and online. “There’s potential to involve many
more delegates and participants if they don’t have to leave their place of work or force area but can go online instead. It’s more efficient in time and money,” she said.
