REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER… IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THIS YEAR

No, there weren’t many Bonfire Night celebrations around the country, for obvious reasons under the current pandemic lockdowns, tier 3’s, semi-lockdowns and the other variations on the same theme: we can’t have gatherings of any kind.

It hits you when you go round the supermarkets and see the racks of kiddies’ unsold Halloween costumes as well… this year just wants tearing off the calendar and becoming a distant unpleasant memory. Let us now hope that we will be allowed some sort of family gatherings over the coming festive season.

Meanwhile back in November, we’ve got a bumper edition for you – as always. Obviously we want to keep PHTM readers updated with the latest Covid developments, both pleasant and unpleasant; we’ve got a couple of cracking stories of local heroism displayed by licence holders, and a positive report of a driver having regained his licence thanks to the backing of his local association.

What started out in our feature last month to be a bit of a light-hearted anecdote, has developed into quite a serious subject matter: that of the proliferation of ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes, widened pavements, blocked access to roads and bridges – all under the guise of Covid provisions. You’ll find a major update feature inside this edition, including a last-minute response from the Government to the petition which was instigated to stop all the over-the-top Cycling and Walking Plan nonsense. Make of that what you will… and please do react, by signing the petition if you feel as strongly about it all as have many of our readers and PHTM Facebook respondents.

Our News pages, as usual, carry a load of stories with much substance and interest. And do check out the NPHTA activity pages: we’ve been just a bit busy again this month, as you’ll see by the number of Zooms and other such meetings we’ve attended, and presentations made, by director Dave Lawrie. He has also penned a breakdown in this month’s issue of exactly what are parking offences, and what are not – with all the accompanying helpful legalese to back his views.

Whilst the likes of Leeds and Bristol have acted reasonably and postponed their Clean Air Zone charging plans, Greater Manchester is ploughing ahead with their consultations on both the Clean Air Plan and the Taxi and Private Hire Minimum Licensing Standards. You’ll see our summary feature inside, with links to both consultations. It’s crucial that all GM licence holders respond to these consultations; the deadline is 3 December, so you’d best get on with it.

Our regular departments and columns are back as well: Taxi Law Explained, columns from GMB and Unite, Know Your Rights, Uber home and away, and a welcome follow-up contribution from Dr Mike Galvin (about Ola) and Ian Millership (about unmet demand surveys and matters arising).

So you’d best get reading! And as always, we’d be delighted to hear back from any and all readers with your views.

Stay safe, try to stay sane, and fingers crossed we’ll come through this awful time very soon.

NOVEMBER 2020 LOVE IT
