IT’S A FAMILY BUSINESS NOW THERE’S SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE!

HAPPY 140TH ANNIVERSARY, WHITESIDE TAXIS, BLACKPOOL AND FYLDE

In these uncertain times of doom and gloom, we thought PHTM readers might like to share some- thing positive: Long-standing NPHTA member, Whiteside Taxis of Fylde and Blackpool has clocked up their 140th anniversary as a company.

We’ve known Daniel Whiteside for a long time, and he was more

than happy to chat with us about his company’s history and cele- bratory record:- “We are a family owned company in Blackpool and Fylde with over 140 years’ experience in offering the utmost customer care, comfort and reliability.

“As the story goes, my great grandfather, Thomas Whiteside, won a horse’s harness in a raffle, and borrowed a horse and cart from his uncle, and, as they say, the rest is history. Thomas’s fleet grew, and the company was instrumental in the construction of the town of St. Annes; hauling building materials from the new railroad to some of the area’s landmarks, such as the Majestic Hotel, which is sadly no longer there now.

“My family’s horses were also on call in the late 19th century to tow the lifeboats to the shore, whenever a ship in the bay ran into trou- bled waters. By 1908, Thomas Whiteside employed 50 men and 70 horses. It was Whiteside’s horses that pulled the St Annes fire engine and lifeboat.

“We have survived the pandemic of 1918, two world wars, and, of course, we have provided a dedicated service throughout this cur- rent pandemic.

“Since those humble beginnings Whiteside Taxis has grown, and is the largest taxi company in the Fylde with our new purpose built offices situated in the heart of St. Annes. “My father retired approximately five years ago, and after 22 years of working my way through every aspect of the trade, I took over. I have had the privilege of modernising the company; utilising the latest dispatch/phone system technology and I have implemented multiple payment platforms for the benefit of our customers.

“At the beginning of the year, we had grown to a fleet of 101 vehi- cles and had acquired an operator’s licence in Blackpool. I am

proud to be a part of this company that has been in my family for four generations. We are in the process of going for the Guinness World Record as the oldest taxi company in the country, if not the world.”

Judging by the company’s star rating and glowing testimonials, you can bet that Whiteside Taxis will still be providing top class transport well into the future. Happy 140th Anniversary!
