DERBY DRIVER SUSTAINS SERIOUS BRAIN INJURY AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK
A taxi driver who was allegedly at- tacked in Derby city centre has sustained a serious brain injury which may need up to two years’ reha- bilitaton. Faisal Raja, who had only been a taxi driver
for two
months, had fin- ished his shift with PJ Cars when he sustained serious injuries after 5am along Morledge in Derby city centre. The 37-year-old is expecting his first child with his wife, who asked not to be named. She said that Faisal spent his 37th birthday, on
December 1, in a coma - but the fami- ly bought balloons and cake for the nurses caring for him. Mr Raja’s brother-in- law told Derbyshire- Live: “My sister is due to give birth in a few weeks. She is in such a traumatic state.” He said that his sis- ter had been talking to her husband on the phone only five minutes before the incident. Later, doc- tors at Queens Medical Centre, Not- tingham, told her that her husband might not make it. He added that when
Faisal Raja
doctors attempted to take Faisal off life support, he went into a “state of fits” and his wife “pulled her out because it was so traumatic”. He was then put back into a coma. He said: “Doctors
have told us that they do not know what the long term problems will be. He might not be able to work again.” Mr Raja has been moved from the QMC to the Inten- sive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Derby Hospital. His wife says he is currently being fed through tubes, but “keeps taking them out” because he is irritated. This means that his weight has “plummeted” over the past few weeks. She added: “He has- n’t spoken properly yet. It’s really tough to get through to
him and he has good days and bad days. “There are very few people that he recognises but I have comfort
that he
knows who I am. He nods his head when I say ‘I love you’. “I expected him to go to work that night and come home. He still hasn’t been able to read my final text before he left work. “It is very hard to get your head around how quickly your life can change. We’ve got a long road ahead and it’s so tough but I’m so for- tunate to have the family that I have.
We’re just distraught because he was an amazing character and individual.” The mum-to-be wanted to thank Derbyshire police for being a “great com- fort” to the family at a difficult time. Derbyshire police have made
six
arrests after an appeal went out to find men who were seen on CCTV in connection with the incident. A gofundme page has been set up to support the family on: https://www.gofund
