MUCH has been written comparing our current predicament to the Blitz – which seems rather appropriate as VE Day is so recently behind us. It’s not a perfect analogy, of course, but it does nicely evoke a spirit of the nation banding together in a crisis for the greater good.

The construction industry has, how- ever, occupied an odd middle-ground throughout the lockdown discussions. The Government has always been clear that some construction and maintenance work is essential and those who do it should have key worker status. Even now, as we are looking to slowly ease restrictions, construction workers doing less essential jobs are at the forefront of those being encouraged back.

And yet, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are being more cautious about lifting lockdown restrictions, leaving many in the industry wondering whether their particular country is following the correct schedule for returning to work.

What is also emerging is a new sense of ‘normal’. While builders and tradespeople can hardly work from home, it remains an open question how many of the extra health and safety precautions are here to stay.
