“We would also recommend linking with the physical library wherever possible, so for example, using direct links from Sora within a QR code on a display in the library to show that there are more titles available on Sora, or that there is an audio version of a book available. Due to the accessibility features, making sure that the SEN or ALN department are aware is also vital, so that they can support the students they work with in accessing Sora. “We now have Reading Goals and Reading Challenges available, so these can be used to get students engaged and keep them coming back to Sora. I love that students can set Reading Challenges for each other too, so it promotes ownership of the resource.”

Delivering insights

As well as delivering a tailored reading experience, the platform also provides access to valuable data. Ros says that the intelligence garnered from real readers can help shape collections, adding: “Within a record for each title, Sora will suggest similar books and once a reader starts borrowing, it will also recommend titles based on their borrowing history. And of course, we can then use all the borrowing data to make sure that the collections are being developed in line with the interests and needs of the students.”

Tech now and beyond Having those digital collections and the

data they generate can help Sora users innovate in their school settings. And with OverDrive supporting the platform, Sora is able to bring new innovations to the digital reading experience all the time. Ros points out that “there is always something new coming with Sora! Within the past year, we have added the ‘Read to Me’ feature, as well as Reading Goals and Challenges. We are always looking at ways to improve and respond to feedback from partners. So, while I can’t say (yet) what is next, I can promise that as great as Sora is at the moment, it will get even better in the future.”
