Retirement? What retirement? This month’s member profile comes from CILIP RPG member David Ball who retired as University Librarian at Bournemouth University in 2012 after 18 years’ service.
We asked him how he has remained active in the profession: “My main interest has been Open Science (the movement to make scientific research and its dissemination accessible to all levels of society, amateur or professional). I worked on two EU research projects (PASTEUR4OA and FOSTER) and with SPARC Europe on Open Data Champions.

freelance consultant, for instance with SERO HE.
“My main current activity is as Chair of UKeiG, which has an excellent track record for providing CPD on a wide range of electronic and digital information topics. We also offer a number of bursaries and run international awards, for instance Jason Farradane, Tony Kent Strix and most recently Open Access and Open Science.
“I also serve on the Committee of CILIP International Library and Information Group (ILIG). Returning to my professional roots, I volunteer as a cataloguer for Salisbury Cathedral Library.”
Did you go to CLW?
It’s interesting how often you meet library, information and knowledge professionals with some connection with the College of Librarianship Wales (CLW). The college opened its doors to students in 1964, as the first and only college for librarianship in Wales, and soon gained a reputation as one of the foremost library schools in the world. In 1989 it merged with the university in Aberystwyth. As the 60th anniversary of the establishment of CLW approaches a recent publication marks the occasion with reminiscences from some of those who were members of staff during its 25 years as an independent college.
