Faculty of the Arts, 1929. Photos © University Archives, the University of Hong Kong

student records and faculty minutes, my last hope was to look through some of the faculty albums year by year. And there he was – standing on the very left side in a group photograph of Faculty of Arts dated 1929, looking dapper and refined. The German researcher visited us and shared his prospective research with me. Li and Dr Magnus Hirschfeld, a famous Ger- man physician and professor of Sexologist who researched on homosexuality, trans- gender and sexual minorities in Germany, were partners. Not much research has

been done about Li and, most important- ly, how his relationship with Hirschfeld influenced his scientific research before 1935, when Hirschfeld died. Thus, this LGBT story fascinated me and I started looking into Li’s story, hoping to use this only photograph with him in our Archives to tell some unknown stories. In December 2018, I visited the Magnus-Hirschfeld Gesellschaft e.V., Forschungsstelle zur Geschichte der Sexualwissenschaft, in Berlin, when I was there for Christmas. I met with Ralf Dose,

Li Shiu-tong.

who is the Director of the Research Institute and has published several biographies on Hirschfeld. Dose was extremely kind and shared all of Li’s photographs and correspondence kept in a suitcase with me. Most of these materials were unknown to the university, including some of this correspondence with one of our local founding members. It explains why Li studied only briefly at the university without any official trace, because of his family ties.
