Attending Seawork? If so, don’t miss the small Craft Surveyors Forum presentations – free to attend
Each year IIMS works with the other U.K. based surveying organisations to prepare and deliver an afternoon of free to attend presentations at the Seawork show in Southampton. This year’s event takes place at the show on the afternoon of Wednesday 12 June in Conference Room 2, starting at 13.30. Watch out for your invitation to attend coming soon. Although a free event, we need to know numbers for safety reasons and you will be asked to pre-register.
The schedule is subject to final confirmation, but we hope to publish details in the coming days. We will open with a joint session by an operator and a surveyor discussing the challenges of surveying ageing wind farm crew transfer vessels.
Bas Edmonds from the MCA is confirmed and will talk about evolving U.K. maritime regulations. Also, if you get to Seawork, be sure to come and say hello at the IIMS booth.
Tonnage training at Itchenor a success
IIMS held one of its occasional tonnage training days at Itchenor Sailing Club on the UK’s south coast in early April. The event drew surveyors from all parts of the country and the group was blessed with fine weather.
Under the tutelage of John Excell, Chairman of Large Yacht & Small Craft, the morning was set aside to study the theory in the classroom. John and the delegates worked their way through the IIMS tonnage manual assessing how to measure a vessel, but also looking at how to complete the essential accompanying paperwork in accordance with the regulations.
After lunch, the group split into two sections and headed on to the pontoons to complete example tonnages by measuring a motor boat and a RIB. Once completed the group transfered next door to the North Shore yard and measured two sailing yachts.
At the end of what proved to be a long and exhaustive day, the group went back into the classroom to compare notes and, more importantly, the measurements taken. There were discrepancies between the two groups proving that tonnage measurement is not an exact science.
IIMS is considering running this course in a central European location later this year subject to demand from members.
Footnote. The Institute is poised to sign a new tonnage agreement with the U.K. Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Anyone wishing to carry out tonnage measurement surveys through the IIMS must have attended one of these training days and completed some sample tonnage surveys to prove their competency before being authorised. Stipulated in the new agreement is the need for organisations providing tonnage measuring services to have demonstrated appropriate training in the subject.
