Despite the pandemic, IIMS delivers a successful practical course
Developing a 7 day practical course with the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis took over one year. The main planks of the course were put in place well before the pandemic took hold and it became unclear if the course could run safely. In the end, IIMS was able to successfully deliver an excellent course for a reduced number of 6 students with social distancing and other sensible measures in place.
Over the duration of the week, students had the chance to get their hands dirty learning skills in the workshops about vessel structure as well as undertaking some practical activities with GRP.
Mid-way through the course, experienced surveyor, David Pestridge, Jon Sharland (Tritex Ltd) and Mike Schwarz joined for a day. David spent a couple of hours explaining how to prepare for and conduct a survey. After Jon has given a presentation on the workings of ultrasound thickness measurement, the group headed to the harbour in foul weather to test the equipment and hammer tap some hulls.
After lunch, Mike Schwarz, aided by Paul Homer who joined online,
delivered a
shortened version of the report writing seminar. The day concluded with a video of Karen Brain (Matrix Insurance Services Ltd) and her presentation entitled ‘Things that go wrong in reports’.
Will Reed, Academy Principal, said, “It has been a pleasure to work with IIMS on this project and being able to use and showcase the facilities at the Academy and our talented tutors for the benefit of the students is rewarding. We look forward to welcoming students to the next course.”
