8 DIGITALIZATION IN MANUFACTURING

REFLEXIVE ENGINEERING DESIGN

A new business model O

ne way of increasing trust between vendors and manufacturers is to adopt a new business model that changes the traditional relationship between them, one where risk is jointly shared rather than all sitting with the buyers. “We need vendors to be willing to equip managers with the knowledge and expertise they need so they can feel confi dent implementing the new systems and technology required,” said Ben. “Digital manufacturing isn’t just buying

a new robot arm and plugging it in. Behind the technology will be software that controls interoperability between different and complex processes in the smart factory.” BSI has outlined a potential new business model in PAS 280:2018 which looks at the

support of an asset throughout its life and at the support systems to necessary to maintain it. “A business model that shares risk and aligns the interests of vendors and customers is one that is likely to increase trust between manufacturers and companies that provide digital solutions,” said Ben. “What we want to achieve is to create an

effective model for digital innovators to work with manufacturing to increase the take up of DM and improve productivity in the UK.” In order to increase the digital expertise

available to manufacturers, BSI is also working with Digital Catapult to encourage innovators to move into manufacturing and apply their skills there.

“The UK is very rich in design innovation and start-ups but not enough of them are going into the manufacturing sector,” said Ben. “One of the outcomes we are looking for from our work programmes is improved links between BSI, manufacturers and digital solution providers.”

A further issue for manufacturers is

introducing new systems and staying compliant with regulations: “Digital solutions companies need to be aware of what they have to do to help customers stay compliant. No SMEs will risk making changes if they think it will make them non- compliant. If compliance solutions could be incorporated into the technical changes, it would encourage SMEs to adopt them,” said Ben.
