Making the case for digital

igital manufacturing technologies have the potential to transform manufacturing in the UK, increasing effi ciency and profi ts for businesses and providing the answer to the UK’s productivity conundrum - why we are lagging so far behind


other major economies. Yet there is a marked reluctance on the part of UK businesses, particularly SMEs, to invest in systems and hardware. BSI has for some years been working with a number of other organizations to make the case for digital manufacturing and overcome some of the concerns behind this reluctance. BSI’s Manufacturing Sector Lead, Ben Sheridan said: “The


big driver for introducing digital manufacturing is increasing productivity, which has never really recovered from the 2008 fi nancial crisis. Around 75% of UK businesses have below average productivity compared to international competitors.”
