Chemistry | Meterials and their Properties A. Kevlar Woven Fabric A
Kevlar has many applications, ranging from bicycle tyres and racing sails to body armour because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. Famously 5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis.
B8R07173 £5.45 B. Polymorph - Malleable Smart Polymer
Polymorph is one of a new generation of commercial polymers set to have a major impact on model making and prototyping. This polymer has all the characteristics of a tough “engineering” material yet it softens and becomes easily malleable at just 62°C.
It can be heated with just hot water or a hairdryer and moulded by hand to create prototypes and solve manufacturing problems currently outside the capacity of other materials. 500g. Beaker, stirrer and shell not included.
B8R02325 500g C. Hydrochromic Paint
An amazing paint formula which changes from opaque to transparent when it gets wet. Typically the paint is applied over an image to produce a plain white surface as the paint dries. If the surface is then brushed over with water the hidden image is revealed. As the surface dries it returns to its opaque state. Size: 50ml.
B8R05744 B C D. Ferrofluid
The amazing Ferrofluid is a truly magnetic liquid that consists of micron size magnetic particles (magnetite) in a mineral oil. Particles are coated in a surfactant which prevents them clumping together.
When a magnet is in close proximity the magnetic particles in the Ferrofluid take up the shape of the magnetic field – a 3D version of the classic iron filings on a piece of paper experiment.
The apparent density of ferrofluid can be changed by applying a magnetic field, e.g. place a one pence piece in a shallow dish (5mm) of ferrofluid and it will sink. Bring a powerful magnet underneath and the coin will float!
Supplied in a plastic jar containing 10mL of Ferrofluid. A rare earth magnet is also supplied.
B8R05624 10ml £11.95 E. Polyox - The Self Siphoning Liquid D E
Polyethylene oxide in a non-toxic, long-chain polymer with a high molar mass that is also soluble in water thanks to its extensive hydrogen bonding. A solution of Polyox (approximately 1% w/v) behaves as an ‘elastic liquid’ i.e. it ‘self-siphons’. If you quickly drag some of the solution from a beaker with a spatula or spoon, it will continue to move out of the beaker. You can even draw it up into a syringe even though the tip of the syringe is above the liquid level.
(5g is sufficient to make about 500cm³ of the fluid).
Supplied in 50g pack. Bulk orders will be supplied in a single bag.
Please note: Propan-2-ol is required for use with this item (see Chemicals section for more details). B8R02324
50g F. Slime
Slimes will change shape to match their container, but will ‘snap’ if pulled strongly and quickly. Slime may dry out after use, so sealing the container after use will extend its life (adding a few drops of water may help). 3 assorted colours, 140g of each.
