Project finance and infrastructure journal IJGlobal Magazine announced the winners of its prestigious annual award for 2020
OPEC FUND CO-FINANCED ATINKOU POWER PLANT PROJECT IN CÔTE D’IVOIRE WINS PRESTIGIOUS IJGLOBAL AWARD

he OPEC Fund co-financed Atinkou power project in Côte
d’Ivoire is the winner of the ‘Editor’s Choice Award’ for the Africa region. IJGlobal Awards recognize
achievements on deals across the infrastructure and energy sectors in all regions around the world. Projects which “involve genuine innovation and move the market forward” are identified as winners. In 2020, the OPEC Fund contributed
to a ¤303 million financing package for the new gas-fired power project. The syndication was led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. Other financiers included the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO), Germany’s Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) and the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF). IJGlobal described this as “an impressive line-up of DFIs to finance this greenfield power project.”
IJGLOBAL HIGHLIGHTS THE INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT IMPACT OF THE PROJECT
This power plant will provide Côte d’Ivoire with stable base load electricity to support economic growth and the development of intermittent renewable energy generation – playing a key role in the national energy transition.
On the clean energy front, it is a clear step in the right direction as it replaces older, less efficient power plants in Côte d’Ivoire which will now be retired. Further, it is roughly 50 percent more efficient than the older plants.
