OPEC FUND CO-FINANCED WATER & SANITATION PROJECT WINS PRIZE

A


t a virtual award ceremony, an OPEC Fund co-financed


development project in Malawi has been named one of four winners of the 2019 Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development by the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND). The event was held with the participation of a broad audience, including representatives of international and national organizations, diplomats, development experts, members of the prize committee, AGFUND board of directors and media professionals. The OPEC Fund’s Director-General Abdulhamid Alkhalifa virtually addressed the award ceremony to honor the winners of the Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development. He said: “The OPEC Fund and


AGFUND share a long-standing commitment to making development cooperation as effective and impactful as possible.” He added: “The winning projects reflect the flexible and innovative solutions required to contribute to the achievement of SDG 6.” Selected from 83 projects and 38


countries, four pioneering projects dedicated to the ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ category won the awards. The ‘Water and Sanitation project in the city of Mzimba’ in Malawi, co- financed by the OPEC Fund and the African

Development Bank, was recognized as a third-category winner and received a prize worth US$200,000. The project has enabled access to clean water and sanitation facilities, benefiting 100,000 people in Mzimba Town. Completed six months ahead of schedule, project works included the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply infrastructure and construction of new sanitation facilities in primary schools, markets, sanitation centers and waste management sites.

First category winner: ‘Social and Economic Inclusion of vulnerable Urban Communities through Water and Sanitation Service’ in Bangladesh


Second category winner: ‘Using solar energy systems to operate drinking water wells’ in Yemen


Fourth category winner: ‘Clean Water for Rural Ghanaian Villages Led by Women’ in Ghana
