1990s
Higher education opportunities arrived in Avondale when Estrella Mountain Community College was built (1992). The city now had two high schools, with Westview HS serving residents north of the Agua Fria River. Farmland was still a prevalent part of the landscape during this decade.
2010s
Quality of life opportunities continued to grow. Avondale was named an All-America City (2014). The Tres Rios area in Avondale was designated as a significant birding corridor by the National Audubon Society. The ZOOM Bus circulator service began (2010), and Festival Fields Park opened (2019).
2020s
Avondale’s population at the start of this decade is 93,000 and growing! As the City continues to expand with new housing, businesses, and jobs, it’s also investing in modern amenities such as the Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers Complex and expanding Festival Fields (2020); Fairway Drive Interchange off Interstate 10, and The BLVD development (2021); the Avondale Visitor and Conference Center, Alamar Park, and its 5th Fire Station (2022); and the Avondale Aquatic Center and Mountain View Park improvements (2024). Avondale’s WeRide micro-transit program launches in 2022, an immediate success. Avondale’s West Valley Health Quarter expands during this decade, along with significant data center investment. From 2020 – 2025, Avondale was the host city for the NASCAR Championship Weekend.
2000s
This decade marked a period of significant changes. The Civic Center Campus was developed (2003). The Randall McDaniel Sports Complex was built (2009), and 115th Avenue was renamed Avondale Blvd (2003). The city’s retail base grew with the arrival of large retail hubs such as Gateway Pavilions, Gateway Crossing, and the Avondale Automall.

Avondale is proud to celebrate 80 years since the city’s official incorporation in December, 1946. As you can see from this timeline, each decade is marked with major milestones that have contributed to Avondale’s growth and success over the years. A city that boldly pursues progress for everyone who lives, works, invests, visits, explores, and innovates here, Avondale’s strong government, with a clear vision from elected leadership and the community, have shaped this community’s destiny. Today, Avondale is at the center of it all for growth and development, for investment and business, and for putting down roots. Importantly, Avondale is a city with heart. Its diverse, tight knit community of nearly 100,000 residents is served by over 800 dedicated city employees who are committed to making lives better.
