Washington corridor in Watts.

The neighborhoods would soon become overcrowded due to the influx of middle-class African-American families during the Great Depression and World War II searching for a better life. Once property restrictions were lifted by the Supreme Court in 1948, many moved throughout the city.

However, South Los Angeles over the years has suffered from significant racial violence dating back to 1948. No matter the burden, African-American communities rose from the ashes and South Los Angeles today remains a community rich in history and culture.

So many successful athletes, politicians, entertainers and community leaders have called South Los Angeles home. Notables include singer Barry White, rap artist and actor Ice Cube, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, NBA player Russell Westbrook, former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters.

Like Central Avenue more than 80 years ago, Watts and other South Los Angeles communities remain the heartbeat of African-American culture in Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Parks are proudly at the center of these cultural events and landmarks, striving to continue the legacy of cultural celebration in South Los Angeles. Check out these exciting events and landmarks of which you and your family can be a part.
