T e Union Mills Civil War Encampment celebrates and commemorates the excitement of the Civil War in Carroll County. T e event is hosted by the Union Mills Homestead Foundation, Inc. and presents visitors with a living history experience. In 1863, this site saw the movement of both Union and Confederate Armies, supply wagons, injured soldiers and an important skirmish in nearby Westminster, all leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg during General Lee’s second invation of the North. the reenactors who headed the event, played the part of Confederate General Jubal Early and rode a retired Standardbred racehorse, Call Me Dale. “T e event at Union Mills is held there as a way to honor our ancestors, especially those in the cavalry, as this was the exact place were JEB Stuart’s cavalry camped the night of June 29 until the morning of the 30th during the Gettysburg campaign in 1863,” explained Sipes. “A lot of us in the unit had ancestors in the CSA Cavalry and some that rode with General Stuart.”


Cale Me Dale was foaled in 2001 in


Berlin. He is by Cambest and out of Lils Finale. Dale spent four seasons racing in Maryland and Delaware with 52 lifetime starts. He earned eight wins, fi ve seconds and four thirds earning $22,961 and a record of 1:57:2. In 2004, he won fi ve out of 15 starts and was voted Horse of the Year at Ocean Downs.
