No Jail Time in Pilchard Abuse Case Barbara Pilchard, who was found guilty in


April 2019 of 39 misdemeanors related to animal cruelty charges, appeared in Wicomico County Circuit Court on May 13 for sentenc- ing. She was sentenced to fi ve years supervised probation and a $13,000 fi ne ($1,000 for each of the 13 horses covered by the charges). Pilchard was also sentenced to 90-days of jail time for each horse, for a total of 18 months, however, all of that time was suspend- ed as long as she remains within the parameters of her probation. She was ordered to not own, keep or have any animals during this probation period. To read more on this story, go to

Cargill Recalls Southern States Feed Cargill announced May 6 that it is voluntarily


recalling select Southern States feed due to ex- cess levels of afl atoxin. Afl atoxins can cause Af- latoxicosis, which in its acute form can result in generalized hemorrhage, bloody diarrhea and death in 1-3 days. It has similar aff ects across all species and age classes, but tends to aff ect immature animals more. T e aff ected feed was manufactured at Car-


gill’s Cleveland, North Carolina, facility and sold in the eastern US, including Maryland, but has been removed from retail shelves over the last few months. Cargill was made aware of the problem when the NC Department of Ag- riculture notifi ed them of test results showing a single lot of a specifi c Southern States product with elevated levels of afl atoxin. Furst Sentencing Update Ashley Furst was sentenced to 27 months in


federal prison, along with three years of pro- bation following release, for embezzling over $500,000 while employed at the American Horse Council. According to a press release is- sued by the US Department of Justice on May 10, Furst was ordered to make full restitution to AHC in the remaining amount of $244,994.87.

record of $99,852,653. T e previous record was set in 2017. Attendance at Friday’s Black-Eyed Susan Day was also record setting at 51,573 people. T e total handle of $22.281 million was also a BESD record, surpassing the 2017 record by nearly 20%.


Program reminds competitors that cannabi- noids (CBD) and their metabolites are prohib- ited under USEF rules and that, beginning on September 1, 2019, horses competing under USEF rules that test positive for natural can- nabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and other cannabinomimetics will be considered in vio- lation of GR4.
