EDCC Launches New Website T e Equine Disease Communication Center

(EDCC), which provides real-time informa- tion on equine infectious diseases across the country, has launched a new and improved website: https://equinediseasecc.org/. T e new site is meant to improve the user experience with resources more readily available. T e goal is to grow the new website as an educational resource for horse owners. EDCC works in cooperation with USDA-

APHIS National Animal Disease Prepared- ness Response Program (NADRPR).

USEF Moving Towards Green Over the past year, the U.S. Equestrian Fed-

eration has been transitioning many of its paper membership processes to online forms with the goal to be more “green” in its annual membership process. T e online forms also help USEF keep costs down, resulting in savings to its members. Forms currently available online are: member-

ship, farm/business recording, show pass, horse/ pony recording, transfers of ownership, horse name change, horse lease, FEI registration for horse and rider, competition applications and post competition reports. T e USEF plans to add the following forms to its online portals in 2023: horse/pony passport services, mileage ex- emption requests and licensee registrations. Members who choose to use paper forms in-

stead of the online services will be assessed a $25 per form fee. If the needed form is not part of the above list, this fee is waived.

Possible Cougar Sighting at Fair Hill On December 10, two trail riders posted on

Facebook that while hacking at Fair Hill Natu- ral Resources Management Area, they spotted a "huge cougar" that "loped across a fi eld right in front of us." T e Equiery followed up with the Depart- ment of Natural Resources to investigate this sighting as well as fi nd out more about big cats in Maryland. Josh Tabora, Furbearer Biologist for the Wildlife and Heritage Service of DNR responded with the following information: "Mountain lions are considered to be an ex-

tirpated (regionally extinct) species, and have been absent from the mid-Atlantic region for well over a century. T is position is shared by federal agencies as per the attached document from the US Forest Service. Sightings of large cats in Maryland are reported sporadically, but are most commonly confi rmed to be cases of mistaken identity. Bobcats and domestic house cats sighted at a distance are often mis- taken for larger animals by reporting parties. Bobcats are also a native species to Maryland, but can be easily diff erentiated from larger cat species by their smaller size (15-35 lbs), con- spicuous spotting patterns, and a tail that is less than half the length of their body. Although mountain lions or cougar sightings have never been substantiated by DNR staff , sightings that cannot be fully discredited are recorded in a da- tabase for future reference." When asked if this specifi c sighting has been

investigated by DNR, Tabora responded, "We have not received any communications from the general public on this sighting thus far." T e Equiery urges trail users throughout the state to contact DNR directly at 410-260-8540 should they encounter any large cats.
