NEWS & VIEWS continued from pg 9 Schools will now open AFTER Labor Day

plus to the Maryland State Fair and all of the children that do 4-H, [who now] won’t have to take off from school to show their animals. 4-H is very important for children to be a part of. T ey work all year on their animals and then some can’t show them at Timonium because their parents won’t let them off from school. T is also should help the racing at Timonium too.” - Georganne Hale, vice president of racing for the Maryland Jockey Club

“While I generally support a later school start date, I think governing by Executive Order (except in rare crises) is a terrible idea. I do think horse shows’ attendance will benefi t from the later start date.” - Betty Adams, Dorsey Rock Farm, Glenwood, Howard County

The Maryland delegation visited Strosholm National Swedish Equestrian Center, a magnifi cent facility with 200 students, 250 horses and 6 indoor arenas...all immaculate. The center uses “active stables” in which horses care for themselves by rotating their own feeding utilizing computer chip technology. Steve Connelly, MFB Executive Director Val Connelly, Catarina Genberg, Winback Farm’s Garret Bell, Marylanders Thora and Steve Pollak and Swedish host Lena Malmqvist

“Highly favor this move. · Students are still in summer mindset in the days before Labor Day. T is will engender a true start to the school year. · Students will be able to fully enjoy/participate in the State Fair, ag- related and otherwise. T e fair is for the children. · End of summer vacations (family and otherwise) on and around Labor Day will not have to navigate early school start. · Students will be out and about taking advantage of summer weather – not in overheated classrooms or overtaxing a/c systems needlessly. · T ere will be a greater opportunity to schedule equestrian events and activities in summer weather and around the end of summer Labor Day vacation. Past practice was a start/stop problem having students return to

class while the State Fair was underway, people were still on vacation (beach, lake, mountains) then hope to get back to vacation over the three-day weekend or pass it up for inconvenience. Positive impact on students having a clean and active end to summer. Perfect moment to then change gears and get serious in the classroom.” - Peter Fenwick (secretary of the Maryland Steeplechase Association; chairman of the Grand National Steeplechase)

“Great! Helps us a lot.” - Andy Cashman, General Manager of the Maryland State Fair

“Love it!” - Carolyn Mackintosh, Loch Moy Farm, Frederick County

“I think consistency in starting times will be a good thing, and also that it will be after Labor Day. Labor Day seems to provide a natural break between summer activities and school activities and it will be less confusing for parents and make it easier scheduling outside events if the starting time is a given. I believe that camps, rides, etc. can easily fall in line with this timeline without any loss of revenue. 180 days of school are 180 days of school…leaving equal time for outside family events.” - Peggy Schulz, retired Howard County School system

“Labor Day was the last day of state fair. It was also the sign school started the next day. I say let the kids show off what they worked hard on all summer, and not have to take a note to school. Just a return to something that worked well in the past!” - Sa Ranson (via Facebook)

“It is wonderful. It will not have a negative impact. T ey will still go to school 180 days.” - Mary T. Bown, Anne Arundel County (via Facebook)
