T e 27th annual Fair Hill International,


presented by


the Dutta Corp., kicks off on Wednesday, October 12 with the fi rst horse inspection of the


CCI3* and CCI2*. Riders from all over the world come to Elkton to compete in this top- notch event. T e FHI also is host to the U.S. Eventing Association’s fall three- and two- star national championships and the Young Event Horse East Coast Championships.


General Schedule T e fi rst horse inspections take place at


club has members in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania and holds competitions about once a month throughout the year. T e group plans to run three games on Saturday: Toss/ Fetch, Freestyle and Dartboard. Also back this year is the fun games competition between champion area steeplechase jockeys and U.S. pony clubbers. T e competition will take place at 11 a.m. in the CCI warm-up area above the Country Shops.

1 p.m. in the William duPont, Jr. Arena on Wednesday, October 12. T e dressage phase for the CCIs and YEH divisions begins T ursday, October 13 at 8 a.m., also in the duPont Arena. T e welcome party for sponsors, competitors, offi cials and volunteers will be held that evening in the VIP Tent overlooking the arena. Dressage continues in the main arena on Friday, October 14, while the YEH competitions shift to the Saw Mill Field for the jumping phase. T e Country Shops open at 11 a.m. and there is a dog agility demonstration starting at noon. T e YEH Championship presentation takes place in the main arena during the lunch break. Saturday, October 15 is the big cross-country day for the CCIs, starting at 9:15 a.m. Country Shops and the Food Court open at 8 a.m. and the Kids’ Corner opens at 9 a.m. T ere are a variety of demonstrations throughout the day on Saturday including a celebrity games competition between steeplechase jockeys and pony clubbers, and the Chincoteague Pony Drill Team. In addition, the USPC Senior President’s Cup Games competition takes place throughout the day as well as a Frisbee Dog Competition in the afternoon. John and Friends Folk Music will be playing in the Food Court area in the afternoon. After the fi nal horse inspection at 8 a.m. on


Sunday, October 16, the CCI competition concludes with the show jumping phase. T e

Craft Beers and Outdoor Expo


New this year on Saturday will be a craft beer tent and outdoor sports expo. T e craft beer tent will feature tastings of a variety of craft beers including some from local farm breweries. T e tent will be located overlooking the galloping lanes, sunken road complex and water complex for great viewing while tasting! T e outdoor sports expo will showcase some of the many other sports that enjoy the Fair Hill Natural Management Area. Exhibitors will include mountain bike groups, runners and cross-country skiers.


Back by Popular Demand


T e alpacas from Painted Sky Farm in Earleville will be back this year by popular demand and set up right next to the Kid’s Corner. T e Kids’ Corner will be next to cross-country again to the right of the main entrance and will be full of fun stuff for junior spectators. Dog agility demonstrations take place


Friday through Sunday and will be put on by T e Academy of Dog Training, based out of Newark, DE. T e group will also be off ering lessons again this year so feel free to stop by with your own dog and give it a try! Additional features this year will be Dancing Dogs and Dog Tricks demonstrations.

Cross-country’s New Look


Cross-country course designer Derek di Grazia is changing things up a bit this year with the two-star course running in the opposite direction from last year. FHI’s executive director said, “T is should give the course a new look and feel.” Specifi c jump and track details are of course kept secret until the offi cial course walk on Wednesday (October 12) morning.

T e ever-growing success of FHI continues to attract more sponsors at the national, international and local levels. Tailgating Fun


Tailgating on cross-country day continues to be successful with FHI adding more and more spots each year. New for 2016 is corporate tailgating with Breyer Horses. As of press time, spots were selling out with only four left! T e theme for this year’s tailgate competition


is “My Maryland” or “My Favorite Barn,” with decorations being in Maryland and/or local barn colors. T e signature drink for judging this year is the Chesapeake Bloody Mary.
