NAVIGATING NEW DISTANCES Virtual Interview Insights By Cynthia Bombach

Once considered a mere convenience, re- mote video job interviews are now unavoid- able. Are they a good long-term solution or just a quick fix until providers can return to interviewing candidates in person? Christy LeClair, vice president of human

resources at Hearth Management, has used video interviews exclusively since the pandemic began. “I think everybody misses the in-person

interviews, but under the circumstances this is the best way to connect with candidates.” Even before the pandemic, LeClair used

video to interview candidates in other states. Remote interviews are likely to remain stan- dard for director-level candidates at Hearth. But LeClair adds that she hopes to get back to on-site interviews for direct caregiver positions, to show the work environment.

According to Leigh Thompson, profes-

sor at Kellogg School of Management and author of the business book Negotiating the Sweet Spot: The Art of Leaving Nothing on the Table, video interviews can be more efficient. “The more comfortable you can make people feel, the better the conversation is going to go,” Thompson said. Participants tend to get right down to

business and spend less time on small talk. Candidates are evaluated more by the con- tent of what they say than by their charisma or physical features. However, it’s harder to accurately assess tone in a virtual interview. Participants can’t share a mutual gaze and get cues from each other’s expressions. “There’s a lot more lost in translation, there’s a lot more misunder- standing,” says Thompson.

To make the most of video interviews, try these tips: • Begin by offering the candidate an over- view of the company and its culture. This helps break the ice and provides a soft start to the process.

• Let the candidate know how long the conversation might take.

• Sit slightly back from the camera, which should be at eye level.

• Make sure to have adequate lighting on your face.

• Look into the camera, especially while you’re talking.

• Glance at the other person when they’re talking to gauge their facial expressions.
