AS A COMMODITY, WHEAT IS ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE AND COMPLEX MARKETS AND SUPPLY CHAINS.
YIELD TRIVIA
Starting with some trivia; which country is the world’s most productive wheat producer (yield mt/ha)? US, France, Germany, UK, New Zealand, China, Russia?
Well, it may come as a surprise that, in fact, the answer is Ireland. Yes Ireland. Interesting really when their total wheat crop is just 729,000mt, placing them way down the rankings as the world’s 58th largest wheat producer. Not surprisingly, however, that of the world’s top 10 most productive wheat origins, 7 are from within the European Union. Understandable though, given that as a collective, the EU is the world’s largest wheat producer and consumer of grains, given the favourable climate, typography and population to suit (please see chart 1).
