Reducing emissions and improving carbon sequestration in this sector is critical to reaching the global goal of net-zero emissions and fighting climate change.
WHAT SHOULD WE SCALE UP?
Agriculture, forestry and land use play an important role in decarbonizing the economy while also providing additional benefits such as biodiversity conservation and improved ecosystem services. Leveraging already existing solutions is key:
• Improve practices, such as animal production and fertilizer use, adding efficiency and reducing waste. For example, through the expansion of regenerative agricultural practices and improving the fertilizer use by correct application.
• Increase carbon sequestration by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and increasing the quantity of carbon stored in soils and vegetation. This includes planting cover crops, minimizing tillage and restoring degraded land.
• A significant amount of the food produced is wasted, leading to unnecessary emissions. Reducing food waste can help to reduce emissions from agriculture and also positively address food security.
• Agriculture can also generate renewable energy from sources like biomass, biogas and solar energy. By switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, emissions from the agricultural sector can be significantly reduced.
• Sustainable land use practices can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. These practices include sustainable forest management, conservation agriculture and sustainable livestock management.
• Improve yield from crops to feed a growing population food production, and as the world’s population increases, so does the demand for food. However, we need to improve ways to produce food with less carbon emissions.
Agriculture and land use are critical components of any comprehensive decarbonization strategy and net zero targets, and their importance cannot be overstated. Many of the listed practices and technologies are proven efficient, however fragmented. Scaling up the agriculture sector actions will put us on track to contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change.
