We were one of the first companies to engage in science-based targets in 2016. Then, in 2019, we decided to adopt a more aggressive approach to help limit warming to 1.5°C. We began a process to re-evaluate our targets, including peer benchmarking, modelling, and forecasting. The result was a comprehensive abatement strategy that spans our entire business.
Our 1.5°C SBTi target was approved in 2020, and was officially announced in Jan 2021. That’s why in September 2021, we launched PepsiCo Positive (pep+), our end-to-end transformation, accelerating our efforts to help make our global food system more sustainable, regenerative and inclusive.
pep+ drives action and progress across three key pillars, bringing together several industry- leading 2030 goals under a comprehensive framework:
1. Positive Agriculture
Our first pillar is Positive Agriculture, which is about spreading regenerative practices to restore the earth across land equal to the company’s entire agricultural footprint and sustainably source key crops and ingredients.
2. Positive Value Chain
The second pillar is Positive Value Chain. This is focused on making products in a way that builds a circular and inclusive economy through actions to:
• Achieve Net-Zero emissions by 2040;
• Become Net Water Positive by 2030; and
• Introduce more sustainable packaging into the value chain including a new global goal to cut virgin plastic per serving by 50% across its food & beverage portfolio by 2030.
LET ME TALK MORE ABOUT THE FIRST PILLAR MENTIONED ABOVE, POSITIVE AGRICULTURE. Agriculture is essential to PepsiCo’s business. But climate change is putting food production at risk. The current food system is both a key culprit behind these risks and a key victim of the damage caused. Climate change, soil erosion, and water scarcity are threatening our communities, and these challenges also threaten the vast ecosystem of resources that enable us to operate and deliver long-term value. With our scale and reliance on this system, these challenges have direct implications for PepsiCo and we cannot ignore them. The good news is that we believe that a transition to a zero carbon, biodiversity sustaining food system is possible.
PepsiCo's Climate Ambition
Reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain by more than 40%by 2030 including a 75% reduction in emissions from our direct operations
3. Positive Choices
Our third pillar is Positive Choices. This is PepsiCo’s commitment to continue evolving its portfolio of food & beverage products so that they are better for the planet and people.
PepsiCo is embracing a new purpose behind our sustainability agenda: TO HELP BUILD A MORE SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM.
