CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Nothing is more certain to put you in the Christmas spirit than a traditional marché de Noël, with its twinkling lights, towering Christmas tree, mulled wine, roast chestnuts and gingerbread, and stall upon stall of goodies and gifts. In the east and northeast of France, there are some particularly splendid markets just waiting to welcome you this winter.
Arras
Immerse yourself in the glorious Flemish Baroque architecture of Arras’s Grand’Place and marvel at a veritable forest of Christmas trees as you wander through stalls selling artisanal produce, jewellery, toys and more at one of France’s largest Christmas markets. And for the little ones,

there’s an old-fashioned carousel, an ice skating rink and all the fun of the fair. And don’t forget to refuel on crêpes, waffles and vin chaud. This year, the market lasts throughout December, with 70 chalets and sparkling decorations spread over the town, in order to be more suitable to Covid-era rules.

Dijon
Place Darcy and Rue de la Liberté are turned into a winter wonderland of chalets offering local products and gourmet treats. But that’s not all! There are rides for children, Santa’s grotto, an outdoor ice rink, Ferris wheel and sound and light shows. Keep your eyes peeled for St Nicholas himself
