Nouvelle-Aquitaine
A huge region stretching from Limousin down to the Pays Basque, with untold holiday gems on offer
"DIVERSE" does not even begin to do justice when describing the family holiday offerings served up by the mighty Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the largest in France. Boasting no fewer than 12 departments – Charente, Charente-Maritime, Corrèze, Creuse, Deux-Sèvres, Dordogne, Gironde, Haute-Vienne, Landes, Lot-et- Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Vienne – it covers a whopping one eighth of the country's land mass. Spanning the south-west of the Hexagon, it boasts a 'who's who' of favourite tourist spots, including Biarritz and Basque Country, Arcachon, Île de Ré, Poitiers, Saint- Émilion and Bordeaux (the region's capital), the Dordogne Valley as well as Dordogne classics such as Bergerac and Sarlat-la-Canéda, Angoulême, Cognac country, the Landes Atlantic coast, Limoges and the Limousin Needless to say, such epic proportions bring a sweeping
array of paysages to explore: lush forests, picture-postcard islands, sandy beaches, magnifi cent mountains and serene lakes mean that campers really are spoilt for choice.
For history and culture, there are plenty of fascinating
cities to explore. Picturesque, riverside Bayonne with its historic buildings and cobbled streets, is where huge crowds gather each year for a massive street party (this year's takes place from July 27-31) and it is also home to an annual celebration of its famed dried ham, as well as being a tasty hotspot for chocoholics! Beautiful Poitiers is a real eye-pleaser (spot the
beautifully sculpted façade of L’Église Notre-Dame-la- Grande) and is only 20 minutes from Futuroscope – a defi nite must-visit for families camping in the area. This hi-tech theme park is a great place for kids of all ages (and

If your little ones enjoy comic-strip books, a trip to Angoulême, France's undisputed 'bande dessinée' capital, is essential. It is the capital of the Charente, which is also home to the town of Cognac – this is the production heartland of the amber
