Grand Est
From Champagne country to Meuse, Alsace to Ardennes, this eastern region has something for everyone...
THE RESULT of an administrative merger of the former (and very distinct) regions of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine in north-east France, sprawling Grand Est features 10 truly eclectic departments to explore: Ardennes, Aube, Bas-Rhin, Marne, Haute-Marne, Haut- Rhin, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges. Having switched between French and German rule
throughout history, Alsace bears countless reminders of its Germanic heritage, such as its architecture, fermented cabbage dish sauerkraut, Gewürztraminer wine and even Strasbourg, home of the European Union HQ and a gorgeous and popular Christmas market. Champagne-Ardenne is a fi zz-lover's paradise – walking (and driving!) routes wind through swathes of vineyards, while guided tours provide a chance to visit family-run and traditional establishments, meet the professionals and, of course, sample some bubbly. Don't miss Épernay and Reims (breathtaking Gothic cathedral) in Marne. The birthplace of the yummy quiche of the same name,
Lorraine has cast its spell on generations of holidaymakers. Its rather regal capital, Nancy, is a real beauty – unmissable is Place Stanislas, its large pedestrianised main square. The Meuse department has some tremendous offerings
for families, from excellent cycling and horse-riding routes to vélo-rail lines and treetop activity parks. Its many First World War memorials and battle sites are essential viewing, while foodies will love its plentiful local delicacies, including

mirabelle plums (jam!), Commercy madeleines and Braquier sugared almonds from Verdun. Grand Est is rife with delightful architecture – spot the 16th-century buildings of Troyes (capital of Aube) – whose old town layout is shaped, quite coincidentally, like a Champagne cork; and the picturesque Alsatian town of Colmar, with its stretch of attractive, pastel-hued and half-timbered homes by the waterfront. There's no shortage of excitement for little ones here
either, thanks to a number of wildlife parks and nature attractions, including La Volerie des Aigles and the Parc Animalier de Sainte-Croix. ■
