ollowing the latest terrorist incidents, this autumn issue begins with a review of the recent Step Change Summit – organised in just under a month and opened by

Security Minister Ben Wallace – that signalled a step change in the joint counter terrorism response beween policing and the private sector. We also include a report from Supt. David Roney on how UK Counter Terror Policing is supporting the national rollout of the CSSC initiative. Further implications of the upsurge in recent attacks and how business can help are covered in our profile of T/Commander Jane Gyford, City of London Police.

Our second theme examines retail security. Jeff Little begins the debate by revisiting the Broken Windows theory and how the retail industry must take more responsibility for self-protection. David Ward emphasises the importance of shopping centre security measures with advice to periodically audit evacuation and dispersal procedures. Genetec covers the increasing convergence of cyber and physical security for retailers and how to better mitigate the risks. Honeywell discusses how retail banking is beginning to embrace digital technology, such as the use of tablet devices, and how this shift creates a new challenge when it comes to security arrangements.

13

In our supporting theme around career and skills development in the security sector, we begin with an exploration of the different roles available – seven people in a variety of roles explain what their job entails, their career path so far and their tips for success. An article from (ISC)2 puts forward fresh approaches to tackling the cyber security gap, outlining three areas of untapped talent. NSI examines the value of certification – identifying how high levels of professionalism across the sector require a set of recognised standards and the importance of choosing (or becoming) a certified contractor.

Mandy Heaburn-Little of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre makes a call for everyone already in a job to give those starting out in their career a break, such as an internship or a project role. Professor Gloria Laycock from UCL discusses the professionalisation agenda for those in security and, in particular, toolkits available for crime reduction. The BSIA reports on apprenticeships and implications for the security sector of the new Apprenticeship Levy. The importance of professional development is reviewed by James Butler, with a recommendation to ensure you have key skills for the future and to be a lifelong learner.

We are proud to be media partners with the Security Institute for their Annual Conference on 3 October and later in the year as media partners with UK Security Expo 2017 on 29-30 November.
