DANGEROUS GOODS PERMITTED IN AIRCRAFT CABIN


Some items that are classified as dangerous goods can be carried in the aircraft cabin subject to the following conditions:


Excepted Those that are allowed to be carried for safe operation of the aircraft or for retail sales, e.g. fire extinguishers and portable oxygen are compressed gases and are classified as Class 2 dangerous goods, however they are required on board and their whereabouts and potential dangers are known to the operating crew.


Acceptable Those items that are allowed to be carried in limited quantities by passengers and crew.


The following are some items most often encountered: Item

Gas Powered Hair Curlers


Can be carried in checked or carry-on baggage, but MUST NOT be used on board. Safety catch must remain fitted. No refills allowed. 1 Person only


Can be carried on the person but not in checked or cabin baggage


Safety Matches or Lighters


NOTE 1: Non-safety matches that can strike anywhere or lighters containing unabsorbed liquefied fuel (except liquefied gas) are not permitted on the person nor in carry on or hold baggage.


NOTE 2: Lighters and matches are also classified as restricted articles and cannot be carried by passengers or crew on some routes


Total quantity of 5 litres per person: Alcohol


Aerosols (and toilet articles)


More than 24% but not exceeding 70% by volume in receptacles not exceeding 5 litres


The total aggregate quantity per person cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). The capacity of each container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces)


Can now be carried for wheelchairs and other equipment in cabin baggage only.


Spare Lithium Batteries


Less than 100 watt/hour rating – no limit 100-160 watt/hour rating – two Over 160 watt/hour rating – not permitted


To prevent short-circuiting, each battery must be wrapped individually so that the terminals are isolated


NOTE: Motorized gardening equipment, including lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers etc., cannot be transported as normal crew baggage. Even though these items may be new and still boxed, invariably the fuel tank will have had fuel in it in order for serviceability checks to be carried out during the manufacturing process. As a result, they are classified as dangerous goods and must be transported as air cargo.
