DANGEROUS GOODS IN CABIN - CABIN CREW DRILL

Certain types of dangerous goods produce toxic fumes while others may be flammable. Should a dangerous goods item be discovered in the cabin in-flight, Cabin Crew should consider wearing a smoke hood and have fire-fighting equipment at hand. If fire-fighting procedures are used, understand the nature of the material at hand. Some items can react with water causing a chemical reaction.

Dangerous Goods & Hazardous Materials 12

• Water should not be used on a spillage as it may spread the spillage or increase the rate of fuming

• To prevent a reaction between the items used for mopping up and dangerous goods, they should be stowed separately

• Bag should be kept upright and prevented from moving i.e. place bag in cardboard catering box or atlas box

• Treat affected seat/cushion/covers in same way as dangerous goods item-remove and place in bag

• Include passenger’s name, address and seat number

• Include details of any equipment used, any spillage and details of where the incident occurred so that checks can be made for any permanent damage

• Ask passenger to identify the item and indicate any potential hazard. If able to be identified, advise flight crew who will check further information in the ‘ICAO Emergency Response Guidance for Aircraft Incidents Involving Dangerous Goods’ booklet.

• If fumes are present, consider distributing wet towels.

• If liquids are spilled, vinyl gloves should be worn under fire gloves to protect hands

• Do not use water unless known to be safe

• Use extreme caution with unidentified liquids. If unsure, leave the item where it is and cover with plastic based materials
