AGENDA

‘Our Magic School sold out in 15 minutes’

We organised a Harry Potter- themed after-school club for our little witches and wizards where they could learn the art of potion making, herbology, broomstick flying and more. Our core team of three divided the planning, organising, resource gathering and making among ourselves, taking around five hours. We also had support from parent helpers on the day. The activities we offered included painting wands, making potion bottles, creating mandrake (cress) pots, Harry Potter colouring, making gem charm necklaces and completing a quidditch obstacle course. As the quidditch teacher, I completed the course four times! We gave the children a handout about how to care for mandrakes, and two certificates: one to confirm their enrollment at magic school and one for completing the

quidditch course. As a parting gift, we made each pupil a chocolate frog in a box with a wizard card to take home. The feedback was brilliant. One

child said: ‘It was real magic school... I learnt all about magic and am now a real wizard.’ Laura Paynton, co-chair, Friends of Locks Heath Infant School (300 pupils)

Grab a bargain for you and your library

at LoveReading The next time the school wants to update the library, buy a class a set of books, add diversity to its book stock or encourage reading for pleasure, there’s an easy way for the PTA to encourage the whole community to get involved. All parents need to do is

Show me the money If you need to count coins after a cash-heavy event, there are several options. Some bank branches have cash counting machines you can use, but keep in mind that you may need to be a customer to access them. Bank staff also recommend counting the coins yourself before using the machine to ensure accuracy. Another option is to purchase a digital scale and weigh the coins before putting them in bags. The table below provides the weights of different coins to help you calculate their value. If you plan on holding regular events that involve receiving a lot of coins, it may be worth investing in a coin sorter to make the counting process faster and more efficient.

purchase books they want for themselves through LoveReading and LoveReading4Kids, a bookstore with a social purpose. When supporters buy a book, 25% of the cover price will be donated to your school. Customers also receive ten per cent off recommended retail prices. On top of this, PTAs and schools can also run a fundraiser using the new wishlists feature. The school creates lists of fiction and non- fiction books they want but need help to buy. The PTA or school development officer can share these lists with parents and local community, encouraging them to purchase a book for the school. Books bought by supporters are delivered directly to the school. LoveReading4Kids will also allocate 25% cashback from every book sale to your school, meaning the school receives free books plus extra funds to purchase more books.
