BASKETBALL & VOLLEYBALL EARN NCAA TOURNAMENT BIDS MEN’S BASKETBALL


During March Madness, the men’s basketball team fought back from a 15-point deficit against Hampton in the Big South Conference championship, which Winthrop hosted as the top remaining seed, to clinch the program’s 12th championship and the second championship under Head Coach Pat Kelsey’s leadership.

EARN NCAA TOURNAMENT BIDS


Graduate student Hunter Hale was voted the Big South Conference Tournament MVP while senior Josh Ferguson joined Hale on the All-Tournament Team. Earlier in the season, DJ Burns Jr. was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year and junior Kyle Zunic was voted to the conference’s All-Academic Team.


What a time to be an Eagle! The men’s basketball team and the volleyball team each secured the Big South Conference title and earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.


However, the week following the Big South Conference championship, the season came to


WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL


This past fall, the volleyball team was crowned Big South Champions and secured the program’s sixth championship in program history and the first Big South crown since 2006.


Winning the conference title gave the Eagles an automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament. The team faced the University of Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that was held in Seattle, Washington. The team finished the season with a 24-5 record, the program’s best finish since 2006.


The team went undefeated at 14-0 in Big South play.

The team’s successful season also brought impressive individual honors. Siani Yamaguchi ’19 was named Big South Player of the Year. It was the first Player of the Year award for the volleyball program since 2011. In addition, Head Coach Chuck Rey was named Big South Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

an abrupt end when the NCAA cancelled the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team finished the season with a 24-10 record, marking the fourth time in program history that the program has compiled a 24-win season.
